Hi Jaffa, I've checked the kill switch,(Took it off,Visually checked it, and tried it with multi-meter) all OK. I'm wondering if there's something not quite right with the points causing the misfire, which in turn is leaving un-ignited fuel in the combustion chamber, causing the explosion(that's the best way to describe it)through the exhaust. Would this cause the engine to get so hot that it runs -on? Wish I'd kept the old condenser and points now, as everything was ok till these wer changed.P.S. I do listen.Honest I do.

Un-ignited fuel will make it run cooler,DID YOU TRY TO STOP THE ENGINE WITH THE KILL SWITCH AFTER THE IGNITION SWITCH DID NOTHING ?

Hi guys--------- REG, I think you may have answered your own question here-- ie "Everything was OK 'til these were changed" --------- therefore it follows that you've either done (or haven't done) something involving the points / capacitor that's brought on these symptoms ???......... in my earlier days involving points etc, they were made out of a maroon-coloured fibre that would sometimes swell with use (heat, oil etc) and the moving arm would not oscillate smoothly on its pivot----giving intermittent and erratic operation....Remove the points and give them a thorough visual and operational check.... I sometimes had to use a small, rat-tail file to ease the pivot hole open.......Another area to be careful of is the actual distributor cap.. Is yours the Chrome type ?? I had one recently where the incoming lead made contact with the plastic, chrome-plated cap and was shorted out !!------- I kid you not !!.........The lead exiting the capacitor comes very close to the lower clamp screw ( clamps the baseplate and the cap is retained on the top of it )--If you try advance / retard adjustments it may make contact...

-------- Yesterday I found water in my Classic 500 fuel tank...Odd, because I haven't been out in the rain over Christmas or given the bike a wash... It was about an eggcup full ..... It had been standing over the COLD winter with about half a tankfull....It's that damm Ethanol drawing in water vapuor and then separating out etc............. Have you checked your FUEL for contamination ??? That would give very similar results re}--- erratic firing etc.......... Regarding that "Running on", when did you last have the head off for a De-coke etc ??

Reg: You will tell us what was causing this won`t you? We all can`t be sitting over a hot keyboard, typing and thinking for hours, lying awake at night staring at the ceiling, wondering what was causing this. We eagerly await your prognosis.

Thanks for all the response guys, and yes I tried the kill button. Also drained half a jam jar fo petrol and checked the petrol in the float bowl for signs of water. As the bike has only done 15,000 kms I,don't think she needs a de-coke. Never had any issues with the bike up til now. I will of course let you know what cures the problem.
