Fear not chaps, I too am no fan of unexplained metal swarf in an engine and the tank Alan is for a different ship so no worries there. (I do have the rather unimaginative habit of painting them all the same colour but that is more to do with the cost of paint than anything else).
The machine with the brass or bronze swarf is the bitsa which is the same machine that had the mystery intermittent clatter. It obviously occurs to me therefore that these two abnormalities may be related. I know that there is no relationship between the timing gears and the clatter so this other bronze bush on the main sounds like a potential contender. The clatter has now largely gone away but I wonder if I will find that a bronze bush has been floating into places where it shouldn't be and has been steadily carved away. Any additional info on this bush would be appreciated.

Simon,
As Mark said, the bronze sleve is the original seal I remember machining one out some years ago and fitted a modern seal to replace it

So smidgen more info required chaps. This is a brass/bronze sleeve on which side of the crank? I've looked at the exploded diagram on the online catalogue but can't see anything that looks likely. This is I believe a 1992 motor based on the 929 stamped on the font of either side of the crank cases. Cheers and thanks S.

Sorry Simon, I tought it was an early motor, early Indian ones still had the bronze sleve but not a 92

Just a thought Simon, does it have bronze valve guides, or maybe somebody has fitted one of those bronze floating bushes

As far as I'm aware Norm it was a fairly low mileage motor that suffer a major front end smash. I don't think any mods had be made but it did have a dodgy repair to the inlet valve where it had lost the valve cap and someone had simply done without. Sorted now but it doubt whether it had done more the 5 or 6 thousand miles. I'll pull it apart when the Reddich one is back on the road next week. Seems I have to have one bike in intensive care at all times!

I thought it was a 51 Bullet too, Indians don't have the t/s bronze bush, neither do very late (60 onwards) Redditch Bullets. I'm saying nothing else now, except that after the rotten summer we had I'd rather be riding, that was my light hearted comment! REgards, Mark
