I've had a slight leak from the gear box for a while and eventually got around to doing something about the slight drip at the weekend. Basically I had to replace the O Ring on the kick starter shaft. unfortunately the O Ring I found means the kick starter ain't springing back so I might have to order up the official part.

That's not my question. I'd expected that the inside of the outer gearbox cover would be dry so didn't have a try positioned when I took off the outer cover. But I clearly had the guts of a cup of water coming out of there and then some oil. The only positive is that when I drained the gear box of oil there was no water in there. I can't remember when I last had the outer cover off but it's been a while. I'm a bit concerned about both the oil and the water being in there. Maybe my kickstarter shaft leak also leaked into the area between the two covers.

In addition maybe it's been so long that water is now and again following the clutch cable down into the area between the two covers. Maybe part of my oil change routine should be to remove the outer cover.

Since I had started this message to pose a question and I might have answered it myself I'll ask another. What does the "detent plunger adjuster" do. The only reason I ask is that Snidal manual says to count the turns and replace with same number of turns. I sort of forgot about that bit and sort of guessed how many turns. I did remember the orientation. Anyhow my gear box is still working so maybe I got away with it.

Jfw,
kick start "O"ring is a special one as you have found out. Outer cover isn't waterproof, no big deal. Detent plunger isn't that critical, I usually screw fully home and then back it out a couple of turns. If it is too hard to change gears, back it out another turn( you can hear it click and if you can't hear it you might need a new detent) if it jumps out of gear screw it in another turn, and if all else fails replace the detent and start again.

Cheers Norm,
thanks a million for that I'll have to take a note of it for the future. And order up the proper O Ring.
