Just a thought on this - God I hope the bloody European Union never make us change us to kph. The two great imperial speeds - 60mph or a Mile a Minute. And the Great Ton! - 100 miles an hour.. PLEASE Bruxells leave us alone to plod around doing 70 miles on a gallon, at 50 miles an hour on our 19 inch wheels, and stopping for a quart of weak ale and an 8 ounce steak and chips at the Pint and Pot.

In a lot of cases things are given metric names over here but continue to be manufactured in imperial sizes. Only recently did a sheet of 2400X1200 particle board stop being exactly 8'x4'. There is no question that being able to divide in whole numbers by more fractions helps but then once we are all happy with base 12 it turns to a very metric thousands of an inch. Then of course there is the whole BA fiasco.

Speedos are not tested in the MOT but they may be inspected to check that they comply with the law - that they read in MPH, that the scale markings are permenent, that their position is visible to the rider at all times, that the glass isn't cracked and so on and so on!...

Alan R and the guys - it's been a while but I just wanted to say that curtain sizes are also a bit odd in that the width is usually in cms but the drop is in inches! And then you have your Swedish mile, which is actually 10 of our miles (so I'm told).
I was riding around with NO SPEEDO for a while when I put the new front end on my Bullet - is that illegal?

The rural signposts pointing to the adjacent villages have had the distances dropped as the signs have been replaced. I couldn't work out why they were being so unhelpful. I wonder if it has something to do with the impending road metrification?

Visually check :
 For the presence of a speedometer
 That the speedometer can be read clearly
 That the speedometer indicates speed in MPH and KPH (If used on or after 1/4/1984)
Note:
If a vehicle has been issued with a Department’s Approval Certificate (SVA), the
speedometer is only required to be marked in MPH.
 The relationship between MPH and KPH are reasonably accurate where they are
displayed together
REASON FOR REJECTION
1. Speedometer:
a. not fitted
b. can not be clearly read
c. does not indicate speed in MPH and KPH (If used on or after 1/4/1984)
