I don't want to muddy the water here and as far as timing a Crusader is concerned just before TDC, retarded sounds about right. Doesn't anyone have a fully advanced figure?

But Howzie's calculation got me thinking.

I always thought that terms such as 1/64 (or whatever) before TDC referred to piston travel not crankshaft rotation since 5 degrees (on the crank) near TDC and BDC will move the piston less then when it is halfway along the stroke.

I'm I making sense?

Hi PaulK,

In the Instruction book from Hitchcocks (the pink one)it gives the fully retarded at 1/64" or 5 degrees and fully advanced at 30 dgrees or 7/32".

I set mine at 5 degrees (3mm) and she starts first time and goes straight up to 50mph no problem, I hear what you are saying and you may be right.

By the way this 3mm is the distance on the circumference on the rotor from T.D.C.

Cheers.
