Hi All, hopefully those of you with more technical knowledge than me can help...
2004 4 speed kickstart Indian Bullet.
Last couple of rides have ended up with goo (grease from gearbox I think) running down the primary drive side centre stand leg...
Engine oil ok , primary drive oil ok - hence my supposition it's gearbox grease. I wont be using the bike again until I find out what it is for sure .

1) Do you its the seal where primary drive goes into gearbox?
2) I think the parts are cheap enough but how difficult/costly a repair is it ?

The inner gearbox cover can become loose over time and may need the fixing screws tightening. Ten minute job to check - off with kick-start, and gear lever and remove outer cover.

This is the opposite side to the primary drive but this doesn't mean that this isn't the culprit. Worth a look anyway.

IMHO,

Do Not worry ,the 4 speed box is very robust and unless it is made "Oil Tight" it will drip/Leak from Time to time...

Mine (Which I put an Egg Cup full of Oil in a Month) Drips and Has Been in Daily use 30,000 Miles for 10 Years.
As Long as YOU KNOW they is Some Thing in there it should be OK,

I Know Some People Like Things Shiny & Clean ! but you do get people saying "Look a Real British Bike it has an Oil Leak" ;0)

I would second Craig's HO. My 2007 Bullet 535 ran 16,000km in 4 years with no top up of the gearbox. I once, very early on, removed the level plug, added a small quantity of oil, maybe 10cc, and it all trickled out. The gearbox always weeped slightly, I suspect from the gearbox level plug. Maybe using a Dowty washer might be better, they certainly cured the slight engine oil weep from the 3 drain plugs. Luckily my EFI is oil tight, so far.

thanks for your replies - I've had a look at the inner case cover - seems pretty tight - so I think it must be the seal between primary shaft into the box. If it was just a bit of a drip I'd leave it - but it's a serious amount of grease coming out each time it gets hot (i.e. both the last 2 rides) so it will need fixing.

Hi Riversax, The source of the leak is probably from the gear box drive sprocket. I've had similar problems. Check that the sprocket is tight. Also , if there is no oil seal on the sprocket , make sure all sufaces are flat and refit the sprocket with jointing compound and make sure it is really tight.
