Hi Am the owner of a RE Bullet 500cc (1995 make).Basically am in the process of removing both the outer and inner gear box cases, when re fitting the inner gearbox case back in position do I have to apply WellSeal sealant on the new gasket? Reason for asking is because it can stick so well I may struggle to separate it later on if needed…Many thanks  Patr

hi pat ,when i,ve fitted my gaskets on the gearbox i use either a smear of grease or some clear silicone sealent all the best paul, p.s i,ve used both methods on my 2 gearboxes both run in oil no leaks .

Interceptors don't even list a gasket , I've put plenty together with just a smear of silicone, aviation gasket cement and or gasket with smear of either above and none of the methods leak oil in the box

Hi Pat. I just used a smear of silicone, but used the semi-solid grease to lube the box. Can't see that leaking out anyway.

No need to put anything on your gasket.

BUT do make sure the mating surfaces are good

In the good old days I used to use "Hylomar". Used it on everything rightlty or wrongly?.

However I now use clear silicone for most joints, even some "heat related " joints.

But as Peter F says you may not need a gasket, providing the surfaces are flat throughout. The operative    word(s) Being:- must be free from distortion and idents, and be flat.

Hi Pat ---------- I've worked professionally for over 20 years (MoD AFV's etc) using Wellseal and it is a NON-SETTING compound. I agree with all the other posts here BUT if you do decide to use Wellseal AS INSTRUCTED (ie you must leave it for at least 5 mins. befor assembly), then you won't have any trouble separating components later on. But it's bloomin EXPENSIVE if you have to pay for it. Just a thought---if there is not a gasket listed then don't fit one ( ie of your own make ) because clearances in the initial design will have that taken into account. However----making allowances for these casings being old and probally dismantled and re-built a few times then a thin paper type ("once-only" use ) gasket along with the silicone mentioned will be fine.  OIL ?? Try Comma 20/50 straight mineral @ £9 per 4 litre.  Now comes the hard part ( said the actress to the Bishop)  this Captcha sum--- OOerrrr !! Where's me fingers ?
