This is sort of technical... A friend talked of getting a 'sump guard' (the genuine RE alloy one) from our hosts. That set me thinking. I ride throughout the year and the roads I prefer to frequent are invariably rich in grit and other debris which splatters over the crankcase. Hmm, perhaps I too should be thinking of something similar. But I felt the need for something relatively unobtrusive. So I've come up with this acrylic shield (mk2 will be in polycarbonate). Protects the underside of the engine and is easily removed (15 minutes) for oil changes.
It doesn't even get warm from the exhaust pipe which was my initial concern and certainly makes washing the bike down after a ride much easier.

Thank you Duke. For those unfamiliar with the DZUS fastener, they are a 1/4 turn clip rather than a nut as I've used, so, yes they'd be off in a jiffy.
The 15 minutes refers to the time to remove the whole lot, clips and all so we'll stick with nuts for the moment, though I'm downsizing to 5mm with smaller diameter rubber washers for the Mk 2. Although I have another project awaiting so not just yet...

This looks properly good. I hate muck, not so much for itself, but getting into places you can't clean and then they corrode.

Thank you, Trev and Chris. My main concern was indeed to stop the muck from getting into the crevices on the crankcase. But I didn't want to spoil the clean lines of the Meteor by obscuring the elegant sweep of the duplex frame.

The Mk 2 guard is now installed, using polycarbonate in lieu of acrylic and m5 rather than m6 fasteners with smaller diameter rubber washers. To anyone but me, probably, none of this matters .

Oh and do you remember using one of these...
